In our world there are many reasons today for choosing to go down the eco friendly route of interior design. Shutters and plantation shutters are one such growth interior product and interior suppliers and manufacturers have been quick to pick up on this and many many people have invested in machining, green sourcing and of course DIY green products have sprung up throughout the market.

One aspect we have been seeing an awful lot of change in is window shutters for interiors. This market is full of wood and plastic based products and it is high time companies took on the mantel of green shutter supplier, which is precisely what we have gone out and researched for you today!

Interior window shutters have been around for a very long time. Since the Greeks and Romans in fact. Today, we face much harsher conditions environmentally than those times, and wood, particularly hard woods are at breaking point with deforestation and illegal logging. We love Greenpeace. Sorry, but we do. And they have been campaigning against logging for many years. In fact they have recently won a long fight for Europe who have finally agreed to BAN illegal timber entering Europe. Congratulations!

We found some wood shutters suppliers who have responded to this change in global green ethics and supply plantation shutters from responsibly grown hardwoods. There is an independent organisation called the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) who have been campaigning for responsible forrest management since 1993. They are not associated with any government or business and displaying their mark is a tough thing to achieve for any company, which is why we are so pleased to have found interior shutters companies both in the UK and the USA who have achieved this accolade.

Hard wood interior shutters are clearly (for us!) the favoured interior window shutters, as and wood has properties which cannot be easily or replicated (currently) in an eco friendly way. Plastics and MDF are not on our agenda, as methods producing these in our opinion are harmful to the environment and cannot be carbon neutral in production techniques which wood can be if correctly managed.

With hard wood shutters from FSC sources you are buying an interior product, which can be replenished, which has been responsible logged and which will provide if maintained a durable and long term window treatment. You cannot get much greener than that. We have learned from speaking with these shutter companies that they use Chinese plantations and products are shipped every 2-4 weeks from china to the UK and USA where they are distributed through normal road channels. Distribution in an environmental way is a very tough nut to crack, and whilst shipping by sea has minimal damage when compared with air, we can see room for improvement. However, that said, it is way better to be producing trees which are managed, regrown and farmed responsibly, than use alternative non FSC methodologies. You cannot have everything however you can have FSC wood for shutters!

There are numerous sites which will review these suppliers including independent companies so you could read about the quality of the interior green products for yourself, however in our mind, having not used these shutters, it is clear that if a company will go to the lengths of sourcing FSC hardwoods, then their interior design window coverings must be of a certain standard. There are clear indicators on all sites which suggest high positioning with clients.  

As with all green products, we suggest trying before buying and that is possible through ordering sample woods from all the companies below.
